ABSENCES
When students are absent, they are responsible for making up the work when they return. We may be able to provide some work to take ahead of time, but students will generally have their "Absent work" waiting in a folder when they return. All missing work should be turned in one week from the day of returning from the absence. They should always check their Google Classroom to see if any work has been assigned there. For math, they should assume we are doing the next lesson in the book. For example, if we did lesson 6.2 yesterday, assume we will do 6.3 today. All math work can be found on i-Ready.
ASSIGNMENTS
Classroom assignments are generally due the next school day after they are assigned. The students are given time to complete assignments. Students may need to finish an assignment at home if it is not completed during the given class work time. This is in addition to the normal assigned homework.
HOMEWORK
Daily homework is only assigned in math. The homework will always reinforce the concept learned in class that day. I do not want math to be taking students longer than about 30 minutes to complete. If it is taking longer, please feel free to cross out some of the problems or just have your child do the evens or odds. I do ask that parents just sign or initial the homework on days that this occurs. I would also like students to read an average of 20 minutes per night. However, I will not be collecting reading calendars. I will leave that to your discretion. Occasional home projects may be assigned, like Stem Fair, but additional instructions will be sent home.
BIRTHDAYS
You are welcome to provide treats for all students if you choose to. Treats can be distributed at the end of the day (around 3:35) or at the lunch hour (approx 12:15) by you and/or your child. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS WITH NUT ALLERGIES, SO PLEASE DO NOT SEND FOOD WITH ANY NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS.
COMMUNICATION
We are delighted to meet with parents anytime there are concerns. You can catch Mrs. Sagers or Mme. Botella almost anytime after school. During the school day, our energies are focused on the students, so we prefer conferencing with you before or after school. You may also email at any time:
Mrs. Sagers: [email protected]
Mme. Botella: [email protected]
CONFERENCES
An SEP conference attended by parent, student and teacher is scheduled 2x a year. Informal conferences can be scheduled on an as need basis. Conferences are scheduled using the Pick-a-Time scheduler on the Morningside home page.
DISCIPLINE
A respectful learning environment is crucial. Schoolwide Expectations are:
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
School rules prohibit all use of electronic communication devices during instructional time (including recess) regardless of whether the use is to send or receive messages. Teachers and other school officials are authorized to confiscate such devices from students violating this rule. Confiscated devices will be held in the school office and will only be released to the offending student's parent. Students can keep their cell phones in their bags on silent and use them after the school day is over.
FIELD TRIPS
The parental donations to our class funds will be used for field trips and supplies. If you know of a field trip or guest speaker that is appropriate for our students, please let us know! Parents are our best resources for great field trips.
GRADING
We will be using Proficiency Based Grading. 4=Above Proficient, 3=Proficient, 2=Approaching Proficient, 1=Below Proficient. You can see your child's work anytime on Gradebook. This is accessed at www.graniteschools.org. Click on GSD Portal and register for an account. If you do not know how to access this, please contact us and we can help you further. We encourage you to check Gradebook at least once per week. Report cards will be sent home at the end of the term.
LIBRARY
Our library day is Monday. Mrs. Sagers takes her class from 1:20-1:50 and Mme. Botella takes her class from 2:00-2:30. Please make sure your child brings his/her library books. If books are not turned in at the appropriate time, they will begin to accrue fees. If these fees are not paid by the end of the year, students will not be able to attend beach/field day.
P.E.
A district P.E specialist will teach one 45 minute class to the red and blue class on Tuesday from 9:55-10:40. Students should come dressed appropriately for P.E.
ART
Every other week, our students receive art instruction from a district art specialist. Mrs. Sagers will go to art on Thursday from 1:00-1:45 and Mme. Botella's time is Wednesday at 1:00.
CDT
Morningside participates in the Children's Dance Theatre program for schools. During the first half of the year, our students will receive dance instruction from a specialist. They will create something they can perform for you at the end of the class. Students dance barefoot, so try to avoid tights or difficult to remove shoes on dance days. Dance instruction for Mrs. Sagers is on Wednesday from 3:00-3:45 and on Thursday from 3:00-3:45 for Mme. Botella.
PROGRESS REPORTING/GRADEBOOK
To access student progress and grade reporting parents must create an account in Focus. You can access this HERE. You will need your child's student number (begins with 9) in order to set up your account. If you do not know this number, your child should know it, or you can ask us or call Lisa in the office. Grades are updated weekly. Parents and students are encouraged to check their grade progress regularly in order to make sure they are not missing any assessments. If you are unable to see this, please don't hesitate to contact us.
